World-Class Team Restores Hope with New Outpatient Building and Wellness Center Revitalization at Historic Los Angeles County Health Services Facility
DOWNEY, California (Sept. 13, 2018) – On Sept. 12, the integrated team of McCarthy Building Companies, Inc., Taylor Design and SmithGroupJJR celebrated the official ribbon cutting ceremony for the Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center in Downey—the nation’s leading rehabilitation hospital specializing in the care of patients with disabilities caused by brain and spinal cord injury. The $418 million, 28 acre project consisted of an existing inpatient hospital renovation, construction of a new outpatient building and multiple site improvements, such as a parking structure, warehouse, healing garden, therapy gardens and terrain park. A 12,000-square-foot wellness and aquatics center marked the first completed building of the project and has been in use since its opening in 2016.
The outstanding team of architects, designers and contractors joined together to revitalize hope for Rancho Los Amigos—a place that has served as a beacon for the community and restores faith to thousands annually. The hospital cares for approximately 4,000 inpatients and services 71,000 outpatient visits each year. Long a source of pride for Downey and a jewel of Los Angeles County’s Department of Health Services, the needed renovation secures the future of Rancho Los Amigos as one of the top-ranked rehabilitation hospitals nationally, with advanced facilities and increased accessibility for patients and the surrounding area. As such, the revamped campus features a common entrance for all patients and visitors and modern buildings equipped with state of the art technology to further the hospital’s mission.
“We are delighted to play a role in this momentous project, helping to reenergize the strong community that is Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center,” said Jim Mynott, Vice President of Integrated Design Delivery at McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. “McCarthy takes great pride in its collaboration with Taylor Design and SmithGroupJJR to reinvigorate the Rancho Los Amigos health care facility and bring world-class medical services to those within our own backyard.”
“This has certainly been a unique and special project to be a part of,” said D. Randy Regier, President of Taylor Design. “The work that Rancho Los Amigos does for the community and the patients they serve is inspiring and we are happy to have been a part of their campus transformation.”
“We continue to be inspired by the great work that Rancho Los Amigos does for their patients and the community. From the very beginning, together we championed connectivity of indoor-outdoor spaces to encourage mobility and reinforce the campus setting. Rancho Los Amigos is more than a medical center; it a place that provides healing, wellness and hope,” stated Bonnie Khang-Keating, Vice President and Southern California Office Director for SmithGroup.
