St. Joseph’s Hospital needed a comprehensive medical office building and cancer center that allowed patients to meet their needs in one facility with centralized services, while providing a comforting place for healing and care. Key design elements included bringing in natural light to aid the healing process, as well as providing warm, comforting finishes. A sweeping glass curtain-wall system that wraps around three sides of the building provides views and natural daylighting throughout the building. The Cancer Center’s second floor incorporates several patient-generated design suggestions regarding the infusion, chemotherapy, and apheresis bays. The bays each feature their own centralized nurse station, with outdoor terraces giving almost every bay a view. Each private bay was designed with a sliding shoji screen to allow patients as open or private an experience as they desire. A below-grade garden provides a verdant view to all three floors.
