UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland Claremont Clinics

The Claremont Clinics are two medical office buildings that needed renovation to create capacity to meet the needs of vulnerable children, improve facilities for at-risk or homeless children and young adults, and provide new EMR equipment and infrastructure improvements. The renovation required bringing the buildings to existing code and keeping them fully operational throughout construction. Because the clinics are off the main Children’s Hospital campus, the challenges also included creating a sense of connection to the main campus. The design recognizes the diverse community and its different traditions with an Inspiration Word Wall, which has phrases translated into each language that the clinics serve. The use of soft lighting internally makes for a more pleasant patient experience, and a standardization of layouts and finishes allows for future expansion or changes. The Temescal Bridge mural provided the inspiration for interior finishes and was used as an artistic thread that ties the clinics back to the main Children’s Hospital campus.
