Kaiser Permanente challenged the Taylor Design architectural team to “break the mold” and re-invent the design and performance potential of the Kaiser Permanente Antelope Valley Medical Offices in Lancaster. To do this, we challenged, reevaluated, and reimagined every feature, system, assembly, and design template. The LEED Gold certified project included sustainability goals included achieving a net-zero energy-efficient building, as well as lower total-cost-of-ownership, through use of alternative building solutions. The 10 degrees forward angle of the façade design provides additional shading from the hot summer sun. The facility’s unique design leverages the desert wind’s power as an energy resource, but was also purposely sculpted to calm desert winds throughout entryways, walking areas and healing paths, to protect its patients and visitors. “Thrivewalk” pathways and outdoor-programmed spaces, including an amphitheater, inspire active living and connection with the surrounding community. The Healing Garden courtyard with reflection pool is intended to provide an area of respite.
