La Brea Bakery at Cedars Sinai Medical Center
Los Angeles, California
The location chosen by the hospital for this restaurant was on an elevated plaza, underneath an overhead walkway, and between the North Patient Tower and the Saperstein Critical Care Tower. Issues such as where to locate utilities, the structural capacity of the elevated plaza, fire separation, and overhead clearance made for a sliding puzzle of a design. Taylor’s solution was to cut away a corner of the existing building, and “tuck” the new building underneath it, locating all the mechanical equipment in that building corner. This allowed mitigation of noise and visibility, and provided more space and overhead clearance. We also oriented the entrances to the buildings so that the doors would not be impacted by wind patterns. The design takes clues from the surrounding buildings in its use of limestone, clear vision glass, and accent metal panels to create a design that serves as a connection point at the newly renovated plaza.
