This project began as a demolition and new construction for the MRI Suite at Stanford University Medical Center, but during construction Taylor was selected to relocate the existing Radiology Department as well. By leveraging strong ties with OSHPD staff, Taylor was able to negotiate field review and approval for both projects, enabling them to continue without delay and expediting final construction completion by four months.
Design challenges included maintaining circulation through both sides of the Radiology Department during construction, and designing the Radiology patient entry to ‘flip’ locations in the future. Taylor designed a complex temporary barrier plan that allowed for continuous access during construction, and designated rooms that could be repurposed for staff or patient functions in the future with minimal construction. The new design features a Zen-inspired prep area that includes a lifted soffit, reed-infused sliding doors, and different wood tones, to create a calming, spa-like environment.
