Scripps Clinic John R. Anderson V Medical Pavilion
La Jolla, California
New Construction, Design-Build, OSHPD 3
The Scripps Clinic John R. Anderson V Medical Pavilion is part of a comprehensive master plan that will transform the Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla campus and redefine health care in San Diego for the 21st century. Taylor Design began by looking at the master plan for the building’s location and its relationship to adjacent buildings. In that analysis, we found that the proposed building location did not maximize the site potential in many ways. Our design proposed reorienting the building, resulting in numerous improvements to the ultimate structure and surrounding space. These included creating a stronger gateway building, utilizing available land better, creating a more unified and larger landscape space, creating a wellness garden, improving fire department access, and providing flexibility for future expansion of other facilities. While putting the patient first is a tenet of Scripps Health, staff space was also an important consideration. On each of the seven levels, dedicated staff break and conference rooms were placed mainly along windows with calming views to outdoor gardens. A 50-seat boardroom was created to provide a gathering area for meetings, lectures and discussions.
