Scripps La Jolla SB 1953 Seismic Upgrade: Scripps Health
La Jolla, California
The La Jolla hospital campus is sited on 43 acres of park-like grounds and offers a wide range of acute-care medical services. This project was a seismic retrofit to bring seven campus buildings into compliance with California Senate Bill 1953. Various seismic upgrade methodologies were applied to each of the individual structures in order to strengthen the buildings performance during an earthquake. The task of the project was to seismically upgrade the structures–the challenge was to do this in a facility that is operational 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Both an interim lab space and an interim pharmacy space were needed during construction. The interim pharmacy was set up on a suspended patient floor, with the nurses’ station becoming the central pharmacy and former patient rooms the medicine-storage areas. We created an interim critical lab in the main hospital with an outsource lab in a free-standing structure on campus.
