UC IRVINE MEDICAL CENTER
CHAO CANCER CENTER
Renovation, Outpatient, Design-Bid-Build
The Chao Cancer Center project involved renovating an infusion center while allowing it to remain fully functional. At the same time, changing modalities of care needed to be incorporated into an established cancer-care program. The Center also required the addition of advanced-imaging technology, which provided an opportunity to remodel the space with a sophisticated and welcoming atmosphere. Through careful phasing and flexibility, as well as operational coordination meetings, the design team discovered creative solutions for maintaining operation during construction. The project encompassed remodeling 2,000 sf, including the main lobby and simulator/CT scan/linear accelerator rooms. In the main lobby soffits and cove lighting were added to provide a bright and welcoming atmosphere. The new simulator/CT scan/linear accelerator rooms include spa-like finishes to bring warmth and comfort to these equipment-intensive areas.
