Miller Children’s Hospital West Renovation
Long Beach, California
In an effort to meet an ever-growing demand for additional pediatric beds, Miller Children’s Hospital renovated a 15,500-sf area. The pediatric unit serves patients as young as four and as old as 17. The challenge for the design team was to create an environment that would appeal to any age group in that range. Working closely with Miller Children’s Hospital’s administration and staff, Taylor created an “architecture of distraction” that engages and comforts both children and their families. The design elements, patterns, and textures are suggestive of sights in the city and leave the true story of the design up to the child’s imagination, which can take them away from the hospital and transport them to wherever they want to go.
